HAYSA Travel Team Formation & Tryout Guide

Clear, fair, and development-focused guidelines for players, families, and coaches.

🚀 Travel Tryouts

Tryouts give every player a fair opportunity to demonstrate their skills, effort, attitude, and coachability.

Who Oversees Tryouts?

  • The Travel Director and Board of Directors coordinate all tryout logistics.
  • Evaluations come from tryout performance, coach feedback, and prior season assessments.
  • The HAYSA President holds final authority on roster decisions.

Why Tryouts Matter

We encourage players to give their absolute best. What they do, say, and show during tryouts matters:

  • Hustle and effort
  • Respect toward coaches and peers
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Positive attitude and resilience

🎯 What Players Are Evaluated On

HAYSA evaluates players using a balanced approach that includes both technical soccer skills and behavioral qualities. We want players who can perform on the field and contribute positively to their team.

Technical Skills

  • Ball control & dribbling — first touch, control under pressure, movement with the ball
  • Passing & receiving — accuracy, pace, decision-making
  • Shooting & finishing — technique, consistency, power
  • Defensive ability — positioning, tackling, marking, recovery
  • Offensive awareness — spacing, movement off the ball, creating opportunities

Behavioral & Team Qualities

  • Coachability — listening, adjusting, responding to feedback
  • Teamwork — supporting teammates, communication, unselfish play
  • Mental toughness — resilience, effort, staying focused under pressure
  • Attitude — positivity, respect, sportsmanship
  • Work ethic — hustle, consistency, willingness to push themselves

Players who demonstrate strong effort, respect, and coachability often stand out just as much as those with advanced technical skills. We want athletes who elevate their team both on and off the ball.

📝 Tryouts vs. Season Registration

Signing up for tryouts is not the same as registering for the upcoming season.

Tryout registration allows players to be evaluated. Season registration is what:

  • Confirms a player’s participation
  • Secures their roster spot once placements are finalized
  • Ensures uniforms, league paperwork, and scheduling can be completed

Players who attend tryouts but do not complete season registration cannot be placed on a team.

📋 Team Formation Guidelines

Placement Rules

  • No player will be cut to make room for a younger player moving up an age group.
  • Players may only move up an age group in Spring if approved by the Board — this is extremely rare.
  • No player will be cut after November 15 to accommodate someone who did not attend tryouts.
  • We make every effort not to cut players in grades 3–6. If numbers allow, we create multiple teams.

Balancing Teams

We aim to create teams that:

  • Challenge players appropriately
  • Support their development
  • Maintain competitive balance
  • Provide opportunities for growth

🔄 No Guaranteed Placements or Coaching Assignments

HAYSA does not guarantee player placement or coaching positions based on prior seasons. Each year is evaluated independently to ensure fairness and development.

Player placement is never an expectation and is determined by:

  • Current-season tryout performance
  • Coach evaluations and development trajectory
  • Team needs and roster balance

Coaching assignments are also not guaranteed. Coaches are selected based on:

  • Experience and certifications
  • Ability to teach, motivate, and uphold HAYSA values
  • Availability and commitment

This ensures every season begins with a fresh, fair evaluation where effort and attitude matter.

⚖️ Evaluation & Player Development

Player placement is based on:

  • Tryout performance
  • Coach evaluations from previous seasons
  • Player development trajectory

We place players where they will:

  • Be challenged appropriately
  • Contribute meaningfully
  • Grow in a positive environment

🧑‍🏫 How Coaches Are Determined

Coaches are selected based on:

  • Experience and certifications
  • Ability to teach and motivate
  • Commitment to HAYSA’s values
  • Availability for practices, games, and communication
